I agree with most, but I think not eating after 7 pm is impractical. Maybe if you go to sleep at 9 pm, but if you get to the gym at 6 pm, workout for 2 hours, do you not get to eat dinner?: If I eat my dinner after 8 pm, will it really matter, if I'm eating the same food I would have eaten at 6? And how can one ever go out to dinner with friends, or go to a party?

[...] Anyway, my goal is to feel good. I don’t know if I can set times or dates, I’m trying to lose a big chunk before Christmas with a friend. We’re motivating each other. After that I’ll hopefully be on my way to 135-140 pounds in a steady, healthy way. If you want to see my plan of action and how I lost all my weight after having Silas you can hop on over to my Health Blog (that I haven’t written in in 500 years) and read “How I Lost Weight Without a Stupid Diet”.
Glad to see you like it. I really need to write more on this blog, I'm a little preoccupied with The Informal Matriarch though. Plus I'm naughty with food when I'm pregnant so I feel guilty. Haha

Just found your blog through Informal Matriarch. Love reading your stuff, wherever it is. Soda is the worst thing for you. I manage to get it out of my diet, but not totally. It makes me bloat up, even just a glass or two.... I noticed that the effects are less if I keep an open can in the fridge and just sip it. Lasts longer and bubbles are minimized... and actually drinking significant amount less.

Great article, pluckymama :D I agree with everything. (My husband thinks the same thing when he sees someone with a slurpie and I try not to think the same thing when I see that grocery cart full of junk.) It is hard not to be judgemental, but then again, you are what you eat. (Most of the time.)

I love this post! Great info. I wondered about that trans-fat business - how they could display on the front 0 grams trans fat when hydrogenated oil is listed in the ingredients. When I was in school it seemed that zero actually meant zero - zip, nada, you get the picture. But, alas, we're dealing with government here. loopholes! Yeah, I don't remember the number, but they actually allow food companies to state "zero" if it's below a certain amount - but it ain't zero!
Oh, I'd better get off my soapbox before this gets too long to be a comment. :-) I always meant to do a post on that . . .

Plus, going low-carb makes people smell funny. Have you noticed that? Anyway, it's nice that there are people like you trying to help others understand how to take care of themselves. I just have a couple of ammendments. Walking is wonderful, and burns the roughly the same amount of calories as running, but only insofar as the distace travelled is the same. If you run for 30 minutes at a 10 minute per mile pace, you burn about 100 calories per mile, so 300 calories. In order to burn the same walking, you have to walk 3 miles, which for most people will take around 50 minutes, if walking briskly.
Also, those lousy labels on foods like saltines are allowed to state that a food has "0 grams trans-fat" when the food has less than .5 grams per serving. Notice how they usually don't say "No trans fat" if there is hydrogenated oil in the list of ingredients. Sneaky, eh? So, yeah. Avoid the hydrogenated oils, whether or not it is listed in the nutritional info.
About synthetic sweeteners, including high fructose corn syrup, they are generaly much sweeter than natural sugars, and have had the disturbing effect of teaching our palates to require them to even taste sweetness at all. Kids who are brought up on packaged snack foods, "fruit drinks," and anything sweetened by HFCS or artificial sweeteners (including most brands of spaghetti sauce!) cannot taste the natural sweetness of a carrot, and thus prefer not to eat one. In that way, they are indeed addictive.
Anyway, I'm definitely not an expert, I just read up where I can. So Amen to the whole post!
